Vertical Fragmentation and Allocation in Distributed Deductive Database Systems

چکیده
Although approaches for vertical fragmentation and data allocation have been proposed 13, 16], algorithms for vertical fragmentation and allocation of data and rules in distributed deductive database systems (DDDBSs) are lacking. In this paper, we present diierent approaches for vertical fragmentation of relations that are referenced by rules and an allocation strategy for rules and fragments in a DDDBS. The potential advantages of the proposed fragmentation and allocation scheme include maximal locality of query evaluation and minimization of communication cost in a distributed system, in addition to the desirable properties of (vertical) fragmentation and rule allocation as discussed in the literature 11, 12]. We also formulate the mathematical interpretation of the proposed vertical fragmentation and allocation algorithms.

A Novel Vertical Fragmentation, Replication and Allocation Model in DDBSs
Modern database systems are commonly distributed, and data is kept at isolated locations (sites). The various sites are connected through communications links, which may be of low speed resulting in bottlenecks for data transfer between sites. Data replication is considered as one of the effective methods in dealing with such situations to achieve improved performance in distributed database sy...
متن کاملA selective enumeration based heuristic for rule allocation
A Distributed Deductive Database System consists of many autonomous deductive database systems connected by a computer network to facilitate sharing of both database and rules. The design of a distributed deductive database system diiers from the design of conventional non-distributed deductive database systems. The former requires design of distribution of both the database and rulebase, where...
متن کاملVertical Fragmentation and Allocation in Distributed Databases with Site Capacity Restrictions Using the Threshold Accepting Algorithm
This paper presents an extension of the DFAR mathematical optimization model, which unifies the fragmentation, allocation and dynamical migration of data in distributed database systems. The extension consists of the addition of a constraint that models the storage capacity of network sites. This aspect is particularly important in large databases, which exceed the capacity of one or more sites...
متن کاملA Formal Approach to the Vertical Partitioning Problemin Distributed Database
The design of distributed databases is an optimization problem requiring solutions to several interrelated problems: data fragmentation, allocation, and local optimization. Each problem can be solved with several diierent approaches thereby making the distributed database design a very diicult task. Although there is a large body of work on the design of data fragmentation, most of them are eit...
متن کاملVertical Class Fragmentation in a Distributed Object Based System
Processing costs in distributed processing environments is most often dominated by the network communications required for interprocess communication. It is well-known from the distributed relational database design research that careful placement of data \near" the users or processors where it is used is mandatory or system performance will suuer greatly. Data placement in relational database ...
